Club to Award $1,500 Scholarship in 2024; Application Deadline March 31

The Lander Rotary Club will once again award a $1,500 college scholarship to a service-oriented Lander high school senior in 2024.  The scholarship is a cash award paid directly to the student, to be used to help pay first-year college expenses.

The deadline for submitting an application is March 31, 2024.  To be eligible, applicants must be students at Lander Valley High School or Pathfinder High School or enrolled in a home-school program.

“This is a unique scholarship based primarily on the service activities of the student, and secondarily on academic achievements,”  Maria Kidner, co-chair of the club’s Service Committee, said.  “We are looking for students whose activities mirror Rotary’s Four-Way Test, which emphasizes truth and fairness in all our actions and undertakings.”

The scholarship application can be accessed in the Public Downloads section in the right-side panel of this Website. Students should download the application and complete and submit it to Kidner via email, along with their transcripts and letters of support.

Lander Rotarians Have Full Slate of Spring Service Projects

-- Sanding and staining Main Street benches
-- Supplying and stocking Little Food Pantries
-- Distributing dictionaries/thesauruses to 3rd graders
-- Assembling 300 “Adventure Bags” for summer fun and learning
-- Awarding a $1,500 college scholarship
-- Exploring development of an adult literacy program

From the early days of its start in 1905, service to others has been at the heart of Rotary’s mission.  Lander Rotarians, led by the club’s Service Committee, co-chaired by Dottie Tonkowich and Maria Kidner, have already engaged in more than 700 hours of volunteer service in the last 10 months, and are preparing to launch into even more projects to make a difference in our community.  Here’s an update on the club’s Spring activities:
Fremont County ranks 2nd for the highest rate of food insecurity in Wyoming. We may not see it, but more than 5,000 people feel it. Lander has established four Little Food Pantries for the homeless and hungry. Ready-to-eat canned goods, energy bars, and other healthy,  non-perishable items are continuously  needed to stock the pantries.  You can help feed the hungry by the dollars collected through fining in April (we will buy food), or you can bring food items to any April meeting or on April 29th.  Volunteers will stock the pantries on April 29. Meet at City Park between 10-12 to help with the collection and delivery of food to help ease the hunger pains of others.

Summer is a time on the reservations that can be troublesome for children. District 5440 donated 300 “Adventure Bags” in 2022. The students receiving them from summer school, the book mobile, and farmers markets were ecstatic to receive a gift. On May 13, volunteers will be putting together another 300 “Adventure Bags” to be given to children on the Northern Arapahoe and Eastern Shoshoni reservations this summer.  The emphasis will be on health and wellness, and the bags will contain books, toothbrushes, toothpaste, jump ropes, beach balls, etc..  This is a joint project of our club and the Riverton Rotary Club.  The Lander  Club, Riverton  Club and the Ft. Collins Breakfast Rotary Club have each contributed $1,000 for the project.  We need you to help create the bags (stuff the backpacks) 9-12 – meet at 9AM 3rd and Main.

On May 12-13 (weather permitting), Rotarians will be sanding, staining and generally refurbishing the 13 wooden benches along Main Street. Bryan Neely is leading this project.  Artistic ability is not required – strong arms and elbows and willing hearts will make Lander’s Main street attractive once again!  After filling Adventure Bags or working on the benches, join your fellow Rotarians and others to share a brew and laughter at Gannett Grill.

Helping a person start their educational dream has been part of the Spring service in Lander for years. This year, the club will award a $1,500 college scholarship to a deserving high school senior at the end of the school year.  The application has been redesigned to match our Four-Way Test.  Two (or more) volunteers are needed to screen applications. (Contact Maria Kidner)

The Service Committee is always looking for new activity projects that can impact our community. We have not done an adult project for some time.  Jackie Nelson, a Service Committee member, has been exploring the development of an adult literacy program and/or Rotary’s involvement in an existing program. If you have ideas and want to be part of the exploration, let us know.
Missy White was ambivalent about whether a 3rd grader would actually want a dictionary.  Well, she got her answer delivering some of the 300 dictionary/thesauruses to Fremont County elementary schools! She was shocked, amazed, and proud to be part of this service project when she saw the children enthusiastically use their new linguistic treasure on a planned project. Thanks to all who worked on the district grant, stored the books, put Rotary stickers on them, and delivered the books. A great job well done.

In addition to these local projects, the club has donated $500 for a water project in El Salvador (led by the Ft. Collins Breakfast Rotary Club); has contributed $3,040 toward a $5,000 scholarship program in Mexico that will be supported by a District grant, and has completed a $9,000-plus  conference to train nurses in Rwanda to diagnose and treat strep throat, which if untreated can lead to fatal rheumatic heart disease.

Now you see why our motto is “Service Above Self!” You are part of this active Rotary club and it is through your support with your time, talents, and treasure that we are successful.  Have other service ideas? Share them with the club’s Service Committee!

A year of war in Ukraine

By John Hewko, General Secretary and CEO of Rotary International

Today is the one-year anniversary of the tragic war in Ukraine. It’s a war that never should have started. And it’s a conflict that has evolved into a non-stop humanitarian          catastrophe because the Russia strategy is now to inflict as much pain on the civilian population of Ukraine as possible.
For a peace-based, humanitarian organization like Rotary, this type of conflict is heartbreaking. Yesterday was our 118th anniversary, and throughout our history, Rotary has   always stood on the side of promoting peace and rebuilding from the ashes of destruction. Peace is a central goal of Rotary, and we work tirelessly to help avoid and stop   armed conflicts. Our focus is on helping people in need and creating the conditions for lasting peace.

But now, the people of Ukraine are trapped in a humanitarian and refugee crisis at a scale not seen in Europe since the Second World War.

This conflict also hits me on a personal level. My parents are from Ukraine. They came to the United States in 1949 after having spent four years in a refugee camp in southern Germany. I grew up speaking Ukrainian at home, and my wife, Marga, and I lived in Ukraine from 1991 to 1996. In 1991-1992, I was privileged enough to play a small role in preparing the initial draft of Ukraine’s post-Soviet constitution and participating in the working groups that were developing the initial Ukrainian post-independence legislative initiatives. I still have a great deal of family, friends, and former colleagues there.

Welcome, Corporate Members!

Last December, the Lander Rotary Club amended its Bylaws to establish corporate memberships, a new membership category, and we are happy to welcome our first corporate members!  A business or corporate member designates a "primary member" as its Rotarian member and may designate two alternate members to attend our meetings and participate in our service projects.   of Our first three corporate members are:

Leadership Wyoming: Tobey Schmidt grew up in Indiana before heading west to earn a journalism degree at the University of Arizona.
Her passions for outdoor adventures and photography took her to Alaska for a few summers, and she eventually made her way to Lander
to work for Hermann Global. Now, years later, she proudly works for Leadership Wyoming and is the Board chair for the Lander Valley
Farmers Market.  In her free time, she loves to sew leather bags for her small business, Wyoming Bag Company.
  And...she’s getting married this fall!

Wyoming Outdoor Council:  John Burrows is the Director of Energy and Climate Policy at the Wyoming Outdoor Council and works
occasionally as a NOLS field instructor.    He is the president of Fremont County’s Trout Unlimited chapter and serves on the steering
committee of the Lander Climate Action Network. John spent much of his childhood in North Carolina rambling down Appalachian
backroads in search of good trout streams, long trail-runs, and backcountry adventures.  He attended college and graduate school at UNC
  Chapel Hill and Duke University.

Brandon Reynolds (Program Director) and Kristen Brown (Associate Director) will be the Outdoor Council’s initial alternate members.

National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS): Jayme Blackburn is the Executive Assistant to the President (Rotarian Terri Watson) at
NOLS and is a long time “Lander lover.” She’s spent a lot of time here over the last 40+ years, visiting her aunt, Linda Hudson, also a Rotarian,
enjoying the 4th of July activities, and sending her two kids to camp at every opportunity.  She and her husband and two children, students
at Lander Valley High School, moved here 3 1/2 years ago. As a Rotarian, Jayme is looking forward to being engaged in more community

Monthly Bulletin Lander Rotary Club DECEMBER 2022
New Member Newsletter # 10 – Sponsor a member

Do you have a close friend, neighbor, or colleague who you think would make a good Rotarian?
If so, sponsoring him or her to become a member of the Lander Rotary Club is as easy as the proverbial A-B-C.

The first thing is to ASK them to come to a meeting as your guest or participate in a service project with you.  Then tell them all the things you like and admire about Rotary and the Lander club (one of the friendliest clubs anywhere!).  And then you ASK them if they’d be interested in being a member of this great organization.

(For many decades, prospective members weren’t told they were “prospects” when they were invited to a meeting, or two or three.  Only if it appeared to the sponsoring member and others that the “prospect” might be a good fit for Rotary would an invitation be extended.  This is no longer the practice, as you’ve probably noticed.)

To begin the new member process, it’s best to check with Shelby Rohrbacher, the Membership Committee chair, and see what she will need from you and the prospective member.  The club maintains documents on Google Docs for this process, and the first is a very short form, Propose a New Member.  You should give Shelby a brief biographical sketch on the proposed member, and Shelby will then submit the proposal to the Board of Directors for its approval.

Then, a 7-day notice is given to all club members for an opportunity to submit objections to the proposed member.  (Again, a practice rooted in tradition.)  Objections are rare and may be based on non-discriminatory grounds, such as ethical concerns.  If no objections are lodged, the Membership Chair obtains personal contact information (another Google Doc) from the prospective member and the formal induction is scheduled.  A dues invoice will soon follow!

Once inducted, the new member receives a temporary red badge until he or she has completed the Blue Badge requirements.  Shortly, a new member orientation will be scheduled, and another Rotarian will be off and running!  As easy as A-B-C...

Next month:  We’ll take a break for the holidays and reconnect at the end of January.  Happy Holidays!!

World Polio Day Events Raise Almost $4,000
The Lander, Riverton and Thermopolis Rotary clubs parlayed a golf marathon and a cornhole tournament into nearly $4,000 for PolioPlus, in recognition of World Polio Day on October 24, with more to come.  Lander Rotarians Brian Young and Jerry Venters raced through 79 holes of golf in just over 6 hours on October 3 and raised more than $3,400 from more than 40 contributors (including 22 Lander Rotarians).  Several teams from Riverton and Lander competed in a cornhole tournament on October 1 and raised another $350.

On Monday, October 24, Pizza Hut will donate 20% of all purchases made with a special Rotary coupon that day.  It would be a good day to have an “office pizza” day for the staff! Coupons can be printed from our club Facebook page and from Foundation Chair John Brown.   And remember that failure to wear a purple shirt to a club meeting in October will result in a 50-cent fine to benefit PolioPlus.

When matched by contributions from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the clubs’ efforts will result in proceeds of more than $12,000 for PolioPlus and the worldwide campaign to eradicate polio.

Officer Nominations Needed Soon
Nominations for club officers for 2023-24 are being sought by the Board.  Nominations for all offices are welcome, and especially important are the offices of President and President-elect.  If you are interested in serving as an officer, or if you know someone who is interested in serving, please let President Sarah, slancast@gmail.com, or another member of the Board know.

Zoom hybrid meeting coming this week!
Thanks to President Sarah’s efforts and a monetary allocation by the Board of Directors, we will return with hybrid in-person/Zoom club meetings next week, October 19!  Our in-person attendance has been good in recent weeks (between 35 and 45% for most meetings), and the Zoom option will enable those members unable to make it to the Oxbow to join their fellow Rotarians for meetings.  Watch for the Zoom link in Secretary Ken’s meeting notice each week.

Mark your calendar – Dec. 7 Annual Meeting
The club’s Annual Meeting will be held on December 7 and it’s important that we have a quorum of at least 22 members present to conduct business.  Top of the Agenda items: Election of officers for the 2023-24 Rotary year and approval of revised club bylaws, including creation of a business membership, a new category of membership.  Please mark your calendar now and plan to be present!

Rotary’s role in eradicating polio

It started innocently enough.  There was a huge outbreak of polio in The Philippines and Rotarians undertook in 1979 to stop that epidemic by vaccinating 6,000,000 Filipino children.  There was a naïve belief that the raging worldwide epidemic that was crippling some 350,000 people a year, most of them children 5 and under, could be stopped in a few years.

That vaccination campaign didn’t stop the epidemic, but it convinced Rotarians that they should lead the effort to eradicate polio.  At the RI Convention in 1985 in Kansas City, Rotarians voted to launch a campaign to raise $120 million to vaccinate children against polio. But Rotarians didn’t raise $120 million – they raised $250 million, and the campaign was on!  (Since then, Rotarians have contributed more than $2.2 billion to the campaign through PolioPlus.)

Soon, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others joined Rotary in the campaign.  The official campaign started in 1988 when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), said to be largest international public health initiative in history, was launched.  Now, nearly 40 years and $19 billion later, polio has been reduced by 99.9% and millions of children have been saved from paralysis and death, but it still has not been eradicated.  (90% immunization is considered necessary to stop it.)

Safe to say, this worldwide effort likely would not have started when it did had it not been for Rotary and Rotarians.  As cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead said:  “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  And that’s what Rotarians are doing!

For much more information, go to https://polioeradication.org/ and https://www.rotary.org/en/history-rotary-polio-eradication-efforts.

Four Lander Rotarians attend Rotary International Convention

Four Rotarians from Lander -- Jim and Renee Kniola and Jerry and Cassy Venters -- were inspired and energized by the internationality of Rotary at the recent Rotary International Convention in Houston, Texas (June 4-8).  This was the first in-person International Convention for Rotary in three years; the last two were held virtually because of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.  More than 11,000 Rotarians and guests from around the world attended the five-day event in Houston.  Some of the more inspirational moments for the Lander Rotarians:

  • A spontaneous two-minute standing ovation caused goosebumps and not a few tears when the flag of Ukraine reached center stage in the flags presentation.  Flags of more than 200 Rotarian countries -- more countries than there are in the United Nations --were paraded across the stage  In contrast, when the Russian flag was presented, the hall was silent.
  • Rotary gained 45,000 new Rotarians this last year, including 150 Rotactors,  placing us at 1.4 million Rotarians.  Most new Rotarians are in India, Korea and Africa.
  • 19 Million lives have been saved with Polio immunizations. 20 Million lives were lost in WWI.
  • Speaker: General Charles Duke (USAF Ret.) was the Lunar Module pilot on the fifth moon landing during the Apollo 16 mission. Speaking of the work involved… “If this thing fails, it isn’t going to be my fault. There was no jealousy.  No one was fighting for glory.”  “We chose to go to the moon."
  • Speaker: John Hewko – General Secretary of Rotary and a member of the Rotary Club of Kiev, Ukraine.  “Young people are hungry for meaningful, personal engagement. Meaningful connections.  How do we do that?”  Rotary membership has increased in Ukraine since the war began earlier this year.
  • Speaker: Dr. Olha, who came from Ukraine to speak at the convention, even without flights out of Ukraine.  She told us “to see a friend, no road is too long.”  She talked of the difficulty of performing operations. That alone was inspirational.  An anesthesiologist in the audience kept wiping away tears imagining what her colleague had endured.   Dr. Olha reported that the Rotary district in Ukraine holds special online meetings twice daily to coordinate deliveries of supplies to those most in need.
An international convention is a great way to meet Rotarians from around the world and experience the internationality of Rotary.  Next year's convention will be in Melbourne, New South Wales, Australia, 27-31 May.  Registration is now open at: https://convention.rotary.org/en/melbourne

Rotary Statement on Ukraine
A message from Director Vicki Puliz

In response to the tragic events occurring in Ukraine, please see the official statement from Rotary International below. I know you are getting many questions from members about how they can help, because that is how Rotarians respond to crisis and disasters when other people are in need.

The events in Ukraine are changing rapidly. General Secretary John Hewko, Director Katerina Kotsali-Papadimitriou, and other European Rotary Senior Leadership are working closely with Rotary leaders in Ukraine to monitor and provide substantial humanitarian assistance in a coordinated, effective way. They thank you for your support and desire to help, and will be back to us soon with action we can take.

Official Statement from Rotary International:

It is a tragic and sad time for the people of Ukraine and the world.

At Rotary, we are deeply concerned by the deteriorating situation in Ukraine and the escalating loss of life and humanitarian hardship there.  Continued military action against Ukraine will not only devastate the region, but also risk spreading tragic consequences across Europe and the world.

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, we have made peace the cornerstone of our global mission.  We join the international community in calling for an immediate cease fire, withdrawal of Russian forces, and a restoration of diplomatic efforts to resolve this conflict through dialogue.

In the past decade, Rotary clubs in Ukraine, Russia and nearby countries have transcended national differences and have actively engaged in peace-building projects to promote goodwill and to marshal assistance for the victims of war and violence. Today, our thoughts are with our fellow Rotary members and others in Ukraine coping with these tragic events. Rotary International will do everything in its power to bring aid, support and peace to the region.

Rotary Giving to The Rotary International Foundation

Thank You for Giving!

A message from TRF Trustee Larry Lunsford

After a great month in February focused on Peace, I want to take a moment to commend and encourage these two Zones on your Annual Programs Fund giving.  The giving levels, through January 2022 and seven months of this 2021-22 Rotary year, are on a record-setting pace.  Reviewing past history closely (the past three full Rotary years), on average, your giving through seven months is typically about 60% of where you end up for the full Rotary year.  If that same trend is indeed the case again this year, then the Zone 26 current per capita through seven months of $151.17 would yield a possible annual per capita this year of $253.55!  And the Zone 27 current per capital through seven months of $146.87 would yield a possible annual per capita this year of $246.70!  When you combine the two zones, the current combined per capital through seven months of $149.08 would yield a possible annual per capita this year of $250.22.  Wow, that is indeed Serving to Change Lives!  You would become a part of a very select group of Zones in the Rotary world.  I commend and encourage this giving – we certainly are on pace to exceed $200 per capita as a challenge this year.  Let’s keep it going!

Work on the Girls Home part 2

This is not an ad, but a plea for volunteers to help us complete the outside work for the service project that the club has undertaken at the Girls’ Group Home on N. 2nd Street.

Take a look at the attached work list and you’ll see that we’ve accomplished a lot this month, but we have a lot to do.  If we can apply some elbow grease now, we can finish this before the snow flies!  So far, we have worked 76 hours on the project!

We will have “work mornings” the next two Saturdays -- August 28 and September 4 (and, yes, I know that’s Labor Day weekend!) -- and I’m asking/pleading for volunteers on those Saturdays to help us get this important project completed.  We’ll work from 8:30 to noon each day, no more, I promise!

If it is more convenient for you to work for a couple of hours on a weekday, we can make that work, too.  Just contact me.

Please let me know when you can work.  We’re counting on you!

Girls Home Project part 1

Lander Rotarians Undertake Projects at Group Home

Eight Lander Rotarians and three Rotary spouses descended on the Fremont County Girls Group Home on August 7 to begin a number of work projects at the home.  They helped clean up the grounds and a storage shed and hauled away four pickup loads of trash, including a large barbecue grill from the elevated back deck and some worn-out couches from the living area.  Others sanded door trim and rails on the back deck for future priming and painting, while others sanded the flooring on the back deck and the entire front entry porch in preparation for staining.  All done with the sound of weed eaters whirring in the background.

Prior to the work day, Lander Rotarians had built a fire pit for the home’s residents and purchased and installed a dishwasher.  The work projects will continue for several more weeks because painting and staining cannot all be done at the same time.

Each One Bring One

“Each One, Bring One” is Membership Theme for 2021-22
“No challenge is too big for Rotarians,” President Proclaims

In Rotary Year 2021-22, Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta is urging each Rotarian -- in every corner of the world -- to introduce at least one person to Rotary.  He calls the campaign “Each One, Bring One,” and that will be the theme for the Lander Rotary Club’s membership initiative this Rotary year.

“Imagine the change we, as Rotary members, can have when there are so many more of us!” Mehta wrote in the July issue of Rotary.  “More people to care for others, more people to Serve to Change Lives (the President’s theme this year).” He is a member of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India.

President Mehta wants Rotarians to focus especially on empowering girls. “Empowering girls and young women to have greater access to education, better health care, more employment, and equality in all walks of life should be embedded in every Rotary project we launch.  Girls are future leaders, so we must ensure that we help them shape their future.”

Already, the Lander Rotary Club has undertaken several projects at the Fremont County girls group home that will help achieve President Mehta’s goal.

The Membership Committee -- presently consisting of Staci Lancaster, Shelby Rohrbacher, Anita Roman, and Jim Kniola, and with more to come -- will be encouraging all members to bring at least one prospective new member to a club meeting or other function this year.  We added seven net new members last year, and we can do it again this year!

THWARTING THE BEAVERS

Several interested Lander Citizens, a few Rotarians, and representatives of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the City of Lander ganged up on the Beavers last Saturday.

It seems as if the little fellas have been creating havoc on the Cottonwood trees along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River and something needed to be done to curb their enthusiasm.  Since the nearby County Jail was plumb full of folks and packing the Beavers in with those folks did not seem to be wise for several reasons, another plan was devised.  Wrapping the trees with wire seems to have worked elsewhere and so that become the plan to help out the trees and to outfox the Beaver critters.

Well, at the end of the morning, it appeared that it was the trees 1 and the Beavers 0 as wire cages were erected around still healthy Cottonwoods.  One of the workers commented “chew on that you little wretches”

Incoming Rotary Foundation Trustee Speaks at Lander Club

Incoming TRF Trustee Speaks at Lander Club;
Encouraged by Giving During Pandemic

Despite the impact of the worldwide Covid pandemic, overall giving to The Rotary Foundation for the last six months of 2020 decreased just 2% from a year earlier.  Directed giving, much of it for projects focused on Covid-related issues, was up 41%, Larry Lunsford, an incoming member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, told the Lander Rotary Club at its March 10 meeting.

Lunsford, a member of the Kansas City Plaza Rotary Club in D6040, said he was encouraged by the level of giving in the face of the pandemic.  Thanks to continued strong giving and higher investment earnings, the Foundation was able to fund more than $32 million in Covid-related projects, Lunsford told the club.

Lunsford also was encouraged by recent “very strong momentum” in Rotary’s polio eradication campaign, especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the only two remaining polio-endemic countries. [Thus far in 2021, only two cases have been reported there.]

The Rotary Foundation has achieved a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, a premier evaluator of charitable organizations, for 13 consecutive years, a feat matched by just 1% of all ranked organizations, he said.

Lunsford was D6040 District Governor in 2001-02.  He served as a Rotary International Director in 2013-15 and will begin a four-year term on the TRF Board of Trustees on July 1.  He is a former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar (Australia 1982) and is a recipient of the Service Above Self Award.

Lander Rotary Contributes to Local Organizations

The Rotary Club of Lander, Wyoming has donated $3500 to support the Lander Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program, the First Stop Help Center, and to the Good Samaritan Community Meal program which is sponsored by the Lander United Methodist Church.

“Lander Rotarians are committed to serving those in need in our community and we are pleased to provide support to these essential local programs. In this difficult time, we will do whatever we can to make sure our fellow residents who need a helping hand or a hot meal are able to get that help.” said Lander Rotary Club president, John Brown.

The Lander Rotary club raised the funds for these contributions through donations from club members and other members of the community as well as from grants awarded by Rotary District 5440.

Brown presented the checks to Jane Nolde, Executive Director of the Lander Senior Citizens Center; Deanna Trumble, Executive Director of the
First Stop Help Center; and Deanna Trumble and Lucy Cone representing the Good Samaritan Community Meal on December, 31st, 2020.

Lander Rotary shares Bison meat with local food banks

The Corona Virus outbreak was responsible for the cancellation of this year’s annual Lander Rotary Fourth of July Buffalo BBQ.  This Buffalo BBQ is the major fund raiser for Lander Rotary’s local and International service projects including the world wide eradication of Polio, local scholarships and youth programs, support for the Lander Community Food Bank and the Lander weekly free Community meal.

Through the generosity of the Raynolds family, Lander Rotary had hundreds of pounds of bison meat that had been cut, processed, wrapped, and frozen in preparation of serving the meat at the BBQ on July Fourth. With no place to use it, the club decided to sell the meat to the public and asked that the public consider donating a portion of their purchase to local food banks.  The Funds raised through the sale were earmarked for the Lander Rotary service projects noted above.
The public demand for the bison meat was overwhelming; nearly all of the meat was spoken for within days of it being offered. As a result of the donation of meat by the public, Lander Rotary was able to donate 48 brats and 100 burger patties plus a $400 check to the Care and Share Food Bank in Lander and 44 brats and 300 burger patties to the Shoshone Food Distribution program in Fort Washakie.
Making the presentation was John Brown, President of the Lander Rotary Club.  Accepting the donations for the Lander Care and Share Food Bank was Audrey Krise Director of the Food Bank. Accepting the donation for the Shoshone Food Distribution Program were Dory Green, Jr. and Jan Pogoree of the Food Program

Buffalo Brats and Burgers for 2020!

This year, the Lander Rotary club will not host our annual Fourth of July Buffalo BBQ as usual.
However, we want to make sure you can

We are selling frozen locally raised, butchered, and processed buffalo burgers and brats so you can host a backyard Buffalo BBQ on the 4th of July!
The burgers and brats can be purchased online: https://lander-rotary.square.site/

They’ll be available for you to pick up on Friday, July 3rd at City Park. Rotary will invest the proceeds from this event in community service projects and for covid-relief funds. We also encourage you to “buy one, and give one.” If you purchase burgers or brats for your family, we’ll discount a second package that will be donated to the Lander Care and Share Food Bank and Eastern Shoshone Food Program so that as many area families as possible can have a Buffalo BBQ of their own.

Thank you for considering helping us out! See the purchase site for details. If you have questions, you can send them to our volunteer organizers through the sales website.

April (4/17)—Jen will lead this meal.

Canyon Scholars—We have not heard yet if the dictionaries we sent made it to the school.  Work continues identifying items on the list of school needs (provided by the school’s principal) to source with the funds the Rotary Board approved.  Hart said that Bill Alley is looking at the possibility of getting internet access for the library.

Food Bank—Jen Lamb reported that the next unload is January 21, and Jen will notify the list of volunteers.  Jen is asking if the Foodbank has a volunteer email list where we can add our volunteers.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing—Linda is updating our Rotary participation numbers, as Rotarians and Interact members helped beyond our dedicated weekend.

First Stop—Linda reported that Rotary can do another diaper drive for First Stop anytime.  The larger sized diapers are the most needed.  Staci will discuss timing for another diaper drive with the board.

The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, at 9:30 AM at the Crux Coffee.

PURPLE PINKIE DAY

Posted by Ken Richardson
Lander Rotary club is holding PURPLE PINKIE DAY on Wednesday November 20, to raise money for polio eradication.
For $1.00, a person can have his or her PINKIE PAINTED PURPLE to show support for this program.
All of the money collected will be used to assist Rotary International efforts in global polio eradication.
You can have YOUR PINKIE PAINTED PURPLE at the following locations from noon to 1:00

Mr. D’s, the Lander Bake Shop, Gannett Peak Sports, Safeway Ace Hardware
While North and South America have been polio free for several decades, the disease still can be found in the Middle East.
Polio is highly contagious, and due to global travel, the whole world is at risk if polio is present in any country in the world

Members: Here is the plan
On Wednesday Nov, 20 we will have tables and donation boxes at the five locations noted above.
Members should be present from 12:00 to 1:00 pm to help solicit donations. We recommend wearing purple if you can and dress for indoor or outdoor weather.
The table  at Ace will be outside and the tables at the other locations may be indoors or outside depending on the weather.
In some locations we feel being on the sidewalk would give more exposure if the weather permits.
Smile, have fun and make some money for Polio!

Lander Rotary raised nearly $4000 for Polio eradication
while Riverton Rotary only raised about $1900
However, in the grand scheme of things both clubs did well raising nearly $6000 for Polio eradication

When you contribute to Rotary International, where does your money go?

Posted by Ken Richardson on Oct 30, 2018
We all have probably heard of the horror stories (appropriate this time of year) of service organizations spending contributed funds for high salaries, extravagant trips and other selfish purposes rather than getting the money where it belongs-to those in need.
WELL ROTARY INTERNATIONAL IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
Here are the true facts (not false news) about where your money goes when you contribute to Rotary International
It has the highest rating (four stars) given by Charity Navigator.
It's overall rating is 97.51%, the next closest rating is 93.92%
It's A&T rating is 100.0% , the next closest is 96%

DO NOT PAY THE RANSOM DEMAND!

Posted by Ken Richardson on Sep 23, 2018

"BELLE" bell nappers violate the first rule of the Rotary FOUR WAY TEST.

Yes it is true, they have not told the TRUTH;  they are holding our beloved Belle at a location other than those crassly shown in the ransom photos.
Scientific examination of their so-called ransom photos leads at least one forensic expert to expose this cruel hoax.
The Forensic Expert offers the proof of this dastardly deed in the dramatic photos shown on the following page.

(warning viewing these photos is not for the faint hearted, the first four of these images have been altered and have been declared obscene).

On May 17, Sam Lightner discussed his new book: "Heavy Green"

Posted by Ken Richardson on May 15, 2017

Sam has recently written a historical fiction book. Heavy Green.  Below is the book description:
"By 1967 the Pentagon could see that stopping the flow of weapons into South Vietnam was the only way the United States could win the war. Key to this effort was the aerial bombing of certain supply depots and constriction points along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, but the weather and air defenses of North Vietnam made that task nearly impossible. Taking advantage of the rugged terrain of Laos, and with the help of the Thai Special Forces and the Laotian hill tribes, the CIA put into place a covert program that could pinpoint each of the bombing raids. This top secret operation would tilt the axis of the war, and the North Vietnamese had to counter it. Meticulously researched and based on information classified until 1988, Heavy Green is an epic war novel that tells the story of this secret operation and the daring raid that was designed to bring it down."

Are you ready to welcome the "Cat in the Hat" to Gannett Peak Elementary School?

In spite of the way the High Sheriff appears, he is having a ball.  Most every one does at the Cat's appearance at Gannett Peak.
Come join the fun!  It all starts this Thursday, March 2 at the Lander Fire Hall with the assembling of the Cat and his entourage on one of the fire engines for the trip to Gannett Peak Elementary.  With it's arrival at Gannett Peak at 8:30, (probably west side of the building but just look for the fire truck) Cat will proceed to do it's thing in the school Gym while Sheriff Hornecker reads the story of The Cat In The Hat to the assembled assembly.   A special thanks to Helen Higby for making all of this fun stuff possible.

Bill and Nancy Alley have photos published!

Posted by Ken Richardson on Feb 04, 2017
Bill and Nancy Alley are again published  in the Photo Issue of WYOMING WILDLIFE
In the current issue of the Wyoming Game and Fish magazine both are recognized for their tremendous outdoor photographs.
Bill won first place in the recreation division for his photo "Riders ".  The photo is of a pack string starting out across a meadow leading to the high country above Brooks Lake.
Nancy won an Honorable Mention also in the recreation division with her photo "Hiker " taken near Artist's Paint Pots in Yellowstone National Park.
Unless my eyes are getting dim, the photo is of Bill walking through a burn area with the steam from the Paint Pots creating a ghostly backdrop.
Great work Bill and Nancy!

Thanks to our "on the ball" Secretary, Sarah Hamlin these are the highlights of the last Board meeting:

  • We were joined by John Brown and Manny Muniz. Thanks to both for taking time out of their day to join us.
  • The new member social has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, February 1. More details to follow.
  • This year there was outstanding participation from our club in the Salvation Army bell ringing. Go team!
  • The discussion from Wednesday's meeting, about the appropriateness of programs continued. The board decided that it will not shy away from community issues as programs (even if they are controversial). The board is committee to representing as many sides to an issue as possible.
  • Just a reminder that a list of upcoming programs can be found on our website (www.landerrotary.org). If you have questions or concerns about an upcoming program, you are encouraged to reach out to one of the current board members (Trey Warren, Mike Lilygren, Sarah Hamlin, Mandy Fabel, Helen Higby, Staci Lancaster, Linda Hudson, Rick Rollino, Mark Calhoun, Dominick Weigel).

In case you missed it:  here is a brief from this month's Board Meeting

Posted by Ken Richardson on Sep 16, 2016
A great big thank you to our tireless club Secretary for supplying this information!
THANK YOU SARAH

The Rotary Board met this past Wednesday, September 14. Here are a few highlights from the meeting:

  • The club is in very good shape financially at this time. This is a combination of a few things, such as having a successful BBQ and Fly In, the change in due structure, and more members asking to be assessed annually for their dues.
  • The board is looking into requirements to apply for the District's Centennial Grant. This grant will match at 2:1 and could be a way to help fund this year's President's Project.
  • Vickie, our new exchange student is here and is starting to settle in.
  • Requirements for blue badges have been tweaked slightly to encourage more engagement from new members. Some of the changes include: setting up an account in ClubRunner, attending a board meeting and 10 lunch meetings (over three months), and propose a meeting program.
As a reminder, these meetings are open to any Lander Rotarian. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the NOLS HQ Alumni Conference Room.

Just in case you have not noticed, our dues have increased

Posted by Ken Richardson on Jul 16, 2016
After much discussion of Lander Rotary finances, The Board recommended the following dues structure to the membership:

Quarterly Dues:  $125.00, an increase of $100.00 per year.
This will more accurately reflect the actual amount that each member costs the club in District and International dues and meal costs.
In short, we will be paying our own way without having to rely on member absences from lunch to pay our way.

"Service above Self" Assessments:  A new charge that will be $100.00 each spring and fall quarters, an increase of $200.00 per year.

With approximately 80 members, this should raise approximately $16,000 per year and will come close to covering our Service Fund Expenses of $18,200. per year.
With this assessment, the membership will no longer be charged for, and expected to sell, additional tickets at our Spring and Fall galas.

At the Annual Meeting of the club on June 29, the membership voted to accept this recommendation.

A few of the photos from the 2016 Buffalo BBQ

These pics are mostly of the a few of the hard working crew.

The Commander in Chief of the 2016 BBQ.  Great job Mandy!

The ticket sellers enjoy a change of scenery.

The right hand serving line.  Food looks good.

The cooks are hard at it.  (it really is hard work)

But with his shift over, Bill gets his food at last.  Good thing that he is a southpaw.

Ken looks like he is very glad to take a seat away from the heat.

Some of the Rotary spouses got in on the work.  Nice hat!

The commander inspects her troops while they work.

Another Rotary spouse working the serving line.  Thanks Nancy.

Would you like onions on that?  Eat them or wear them?

Hey Susan is serving lunch more fun than running a clothing store?

Dale is glad that his shift is over.

Anna greets customers with a great smile.

Ron's smile isn't bad, but it does not hold a candle to Anna's

Would you like more than four hotdogs?

Trey and Shelli take time out to clown it up for the camera.

Linda takes a pause for refreshment.  Or wait is that the other drink's slogan?

Leslie indicates that the Interact ice cream sales are booming.

The Past President (by 4 days) take part in the work.

The Interact members assist in the cleanup process.

The interact members look to the Commander in Chief for directions.

And Dominick keeps tabs on the job they are doing.

The cleanup crew begins to disassemble tables and pack them away for the 2017 edition of the BBQ

Trey assists with cleanup and contemplates the preparations for next year

May was responsible tor getting the Buffalo meat free for the BBQ again this year. It's great to have her back with the club over the summer.

Bill sneaks by the serving line. Is he hoping that he won't get called on to help?

Photos from three December Meetings 1

We've had some great programs the first three meetings in December

Too bad a lot of Lander Rotarians missed them.
But.. those of us that attended enjoyed them.

Here are some pics from the December 2 meeting.

A former Casper Rotary Member and
now a Lander Rotarian, Steve Liebzeit,
gave a great re-classification
talk .  Talk about lots of hobbies (?)
that cause wear and tear on the
body he has had them.  We're glad
you joined us Steve.
A prospective member, Lance Hopkin
visits with member Brady Bower.
Linda Raynolds brought her mother,
May to the meeting.  It's great that
May can still attend the meetings.
Thanks Linda!

Andy Gramlich had some words of
wisdom for the club.

We had better attendance at the December 9 meeting.

And this man may be the reason why!
Mike (Moose) Dabich gave the program
on his years as a basketball player.  From
high school under coach Gene Patch to
several college teams and on to the pros.
Told with humor and humility.
Bill Sniffin displays one of Moose's
latest handiwork:  string instruments
made from bed pans.

As usual, our beloved president passes the
tin cup to collect fines.  He is getting too
good at it.
Susan Meeker is the finer on this fine
day.  Of course Mark is right behind her
with the dreaded tin cup.
Linda Hudson explains to the group the
schedule for ringing bells for the Salvation
Army.  Again, the Lander Rotary Club raised
a nice tidy sum for this worthwhile cause.

The long and the short of it.  Mickey
Douglas and Mike Vinich team up for
a special photo.
Patty Troutman brought her husband, Gary
to enjoy Moose's presentation.
Jackson Rotarian, Katie Murphy addresses
the meeting.  Wonder if the Jackson clubs
have as off-beat programs as we have in Lander.

We enjoyed a super program at the December 16 meeting

Of Course Santa Sheriff showed up to
find out who had been naughty and nice.
Since he is the "high sheriff" none of us
'fessed up to being naughty!  Although we
were all nice, Santa Sheriff fined every last
one of us.
Steve Liebzeit brought his Daughter, Faith
and her "intended" to the meeting.  December
19th was her birthday; of course she got serenaded
along with all of the rest of the birthday people.
The Program was great.  Newest member, Sam
Lightner gave his classification talk.  Sam is a
climber, author, and all around nice guy.  We're
glad that he joined us.  He is in the company of
several other Lander Rotarians who practice that
very dangerous sport of leaving all their senses
behind and climbing big rocks.

Sam brought his climbing buddy and wife
Liz Lightner to enjoy the progam.  You guessed
it, Sam and Liz met on a climbing date.
Linda Hudson takes the mic to give the
club the tally on the Rotary Salvation Army Bell
ringing project.  Well done Linda!
John Boyle is caught ringing the
Salvation Army bells in front of
Safeway on a frosty day.
Ernie Over's brother Jim joined us for
our luncheon meeting.  Welcome Jim.
Santa Sheriff and Marvin Brown harmonize
over a Christmas Carol.
Bill and Nancy Sniffin seem to be
enjoying the program.  Always good
to see you Nancy!

The Lander Rotary workers serve the fly-in guests lunch

Posted by Ken Richardson on Sep 15, 2015

"Service above self"

Lander Rotary provides another public service to the community!

On Saturday September 12, the Annual Lander Fly-In and Car Show was held at Hunt Field

Lander Rotarian Travis Gallo was the organizer of the event this year and he invited
Lander Rotary to do this as a public service and fund raiser.

For the first time ever, visitors and participants were able to enjoy lunch at Hunt Field.

Thanks to Lander Rotarian, Helen Higby the fund raiser was a success, both
in service to the community and financially for Lander Rotary.

Helen had lots of help from her fellow Rotarians and their family:

And of course some of the Rotarians had to mug for the camera.

Thanks Helen for heading up this community service project.

Thanks to Lander Rotary, this participant flew home with a full stomach.

Lander Rotary and Lander Interact team up to clean up the MAW grounds

Posted by Ken Richardson on Jun 06, 2015

A bunch of eager young Lander Interact Club members were on hand at the MAW grounds to show the Lander Rotarians how to get real work done. The young adults offered classes in grass pulling, digging and bagging to the more sedate Rotarians.

The only one not working was a very smart dog that found some shade and relaxed while the toil was progressing around her.

To show their appreciation to the Interact workers, the Lander Rotary Club treated them to lunch and a Game and Fish presentation on fishing in the Wind River Range.

Where we stand on contributions to the RIF so far this year

Posted by Ken Richardson on Mar 11, 2015
President-Elect Mark brought back information on our club's standing with our
contributions to the Rotary International Fund so far this fiscal year.
this information came from Mark's attendance at the PETS conference earlier this month.

This report indicates that we have raised $3311 so far
so...we still have a ways to go to reach our goal of $5500 this year.

Remember we need to raise $50 per member to qualify for grants from District or National.
With our current count of 86 active members we need to raise $4300.  We are getting close to that goal
but we are not there yet.

Remember:

John announced that NOLS celebrated 50 years of incorporation on March 4th

Jessica reminded the club of the "Jackalope Jump" for Special Olympics coming up on March 25th

Ken reminded the club of the need for auction items for the Shamrock Shindig.

Dominick brought his daughter, Mary as a guest.  Mary really looks up to her dad.

Vince was the secret greeter and he was the last to arrive.  He raised a bunch of $$$ for the club.

The Cat in the Hat will visit Gannett Peak Elementary School on March 6.

Wonder of wonders, the cat has finally decided that it will arrive at
Gannett Peak Elementary at 8:15 am.  Expect to see it near the West entrance.

The Cat will arrive by fire truck, so if you would like to ride along, meet at the Fire Station probably about 8:00 am

The Cat really likes support when it visits with kids.  It also helps to get the Rotary Name out into the community.
Besides, it is a real hoot watching the Cat in action.
Plan on attending!

It would be of great help to the webmaster if members of the club would email Ken at kar@wyoming.com any links to news stories about Lander Rotarians. Lacking a link, just a brief description of who, what and where would help.

If you have new a position, award or other personal or business updates that you would like to share with the club, please let Ken know. Hopefully Lander Rotarians In The News can be an on-going club program.

The Cat and friends make it to Gannett Peak Elementary once again

Posted by Ken Richardson on Mar 04, 2014
story thumbnail

The Cat came back!
Only this time it was welcomed by a bunch of eager kindergartners and first graders at Gannett Peak Elementary.
The Doctor Seuss characters, The Cat in the Hat and Things One and Two entertained the kids with their antics while
Fremont County Sheriff Skip Hornecker narrated the story of the wayward cat and his friends.
Judging by the grins on the kids they had almost as much fun as the performers!
A tip of the Cat's Hat goes out to organizer Helen Higby, Skip Hornecker, the Wyoming Catholic College student "Things" and of course to the Cat who shall remain un-named at this time.
