We’re making history! On December 7, the club elected what surely is one of the youngest leadership teams in its history. Mandy Fabel, 37, was elected as president for the 2023-24 Rotary year, and Shelby Rohrbacher, 26, was elected as President-elect. Most likely, Mandy and Shelby will be the youngest club leaders in District 5440 next year!
Ken Schreuder, 61, a Lander Rotarian since 2003, was re-elected to his fourth term as secretary. The treasurer’s post will be managed by the triumvirate of Mike Lilygren, Sarah Hamlin, and Mandy again next year. Tammy Green, a Lander beautician known for her charitable work, was selected as the Community Member for 2023-24.

Dictionary/Thesaurus Project: Reviving a popular project, Lander Rotarians will soon be distributing 300 combined dictionary/thesaurus books to third graders at Gannett Peak Elementary School. Rotarians MJ Greene and Cassy Venters revised the project in cooperation with the Gannet Peak school librarian, who will build a curriculum for teaching students how to use the books and work with other third grade teachers in implementing it. The thesaurus was added at the suggestion of educators. Dominick Weigel will lead in the delivery of the books. The club invested $440 in the project and received an $880 District Governor’s Grant.
New Business Membership Approved: At the Annual Meeting on December 7, club members approved amended Bylaws for governance of the club. A major feature of the new Bylaws is a business or corporate membership category, allowing businesses to designate a primary, voting Rotary member and two additional employees to attend club meetings and participate in club projects and activities. At its meeting on December 14, the Board set the annual dues amount for business members at $1,000 per year (pro-rated). We are hopeful that this new category will help us grow our club.

Nurses’ training in Rwanda: Maria Kidner has just returned from Rwanda, where she is setting up the club’s pilot project, a train-the trainer project to train Rawandan nurses in strep throat detection and prevention. If not properly treated, strep throat can lead to rheumatic heart disease and an early death. The training will take place in February.
Whiskey tasting: Thirteen persons enjoyed three different single-malt whiskeys at our whiskey-tasting group’s November meeting at the home of Ken Schreuder and Lorrie Pozarik. The January meeting, tentatively set for January 19, will feature bourbon and will be at the home of Andy Gramlich and Jackie Nelson. Watch your emails for details.
Good news from Ukraine: Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, Rotary membership in the country has grown 23.5%. Four Rotary clubs and five satellite clubs have been started. Pretty amazing...shows us how powerful Rotary can be!
