The Lander Rotary Club will once again award a $1,500 college scholarship to a service-oriented Lander high school senior in 2024. The scholarship is a cash award paid directly to the student, to be used to help pay first-year college expenses. The deadline for submitting an application is March 31, 2024. To be eligible, applicants must be students at Lander Valley High School or Pathfinder High School or enrolled in a home-school program. “This is a unique scholarship based primarily on the service activities of the student, and secondarily on academic achievements,” Maria Kidner, co-chair of the club’s Service Committee, said. “We are looking for students whose activities mirror Rotary’s Four-Way Test, which emphasizes truth and fairness in all our actions and undertakings.” The scholarship application can be accessed in the Public Downloads section in the right-side panel of this Website. Students should download the application and complete and submit it to Kidner via email, along with their transcripts and letters of support. (Story updated January 9, 2024)

Lander Rotarians Have Full Slate of Spring Service Projects-- Sanding and staining Main Street benches -- Supplying and stocking Little Food Pantries -- Distributing dictionaries/thesauruses to 3rd graders -- Assembling 300 “Adventure Bags” for summer fun and learning -- Awarding a $1,500 college scholarship -- Exploring development of an adult literacy program From the early days of its start in 1905, service to others has been at the heart of Rotary’s mission. Lander Rotarians, led by the club’s Service Committee, co-chaired by Dottie Tonkowich and Maria Kidner, have already engaged in more than 700 hours of volunteer service in the last 10 months, and are preparing to launch into even more projects to make a difference in our community. Here’s an update on the club’s Spring activities: Fremont County ranks 2nd for the highest rate of food insecurity in Wyoming. We may not see it, but more than 5,000 people feel it. Lander has established four Little Food Pantries for the homeless and hungry. Ready-to-eat canned goods, energy bars, and other healthy, non-perishable items are continuously needed to stock the pantries. You can help feed the hungry by the dollars collected through fining in April (we will buy food), or you can bring food items to any April meeting or on April 29th. Volunteers will stock the pantries on April 29. Meet at City Park between 10-12 to help with the collection and delivery of food to help ease the hunger pains of others. Summer is a time on the reservations that can be troublesome for children. District 5440 donated 300 “Adventure Bags” in 2022. The students receiving them from summer school, the book mobile, and farmers markets were ecstatic to receive a gift. On May 13, volunteers will be putting together another 300 “Adventure Bags” to be given to children on the Northern Arapahoe and Eastern Shoshoni reservations this summer. The emphasis will be on health and wellness, and the bags will contain books, toothbrushes, toothpaste, jump ropes, beach balls, etc.. This is a joint project of our club and the Riverton Rotary Club. The Lander Club, Riverton Club and the Ft. Collins Breakfast Rotary Club have each contributed $1,000 for the project. We need you to help create the bags (stuff the backpacks) 9-12 – meet at 9AM 3rd and Main. On May 12-13 (weather permitting), Rotarians will be sanding, staining and generally refurbishing the 13 wooden benches along Main Street. Bryan Neely is leading this project. Artistic ability is not required – strong arms and elbows and willing hearts will make Lander’s Main street attractive once again! After filling Adventure Bags or working on the benches, join your fellow Rotarians and others to share a brew and laughter at Gannett Grill. Helping a person start their educational dream has been part of the Spring service in Lander for years. This year, the club will award a $1,500 college scholarship to a deserving high school senior at the end of the school year. The application has been redesigned to match our Four-Way Test. Two (or more) volunteers are needed to screen applications. (Contact Maria Kidner) The Service Committee is always looking for new activity projects that can impact our community. We have not done an adult project for some time. Jackie Nelson, a Service Committee member, has been exploring the development of an adult literacy program and/or Rotary’s involvement in an existing program. If you have ideas and want to be part of the exploration, let us know. Missy White was ambivalent about whether a 3rd grader would actually want a dictionary. Well, she got her answer delivering some of the 300 dictionary/thesauruses to Fremont County elementary schools! She was shocked, amazed, and proud to be part of this service project when she saw the children enthusiastically use their new linguistic treasure on a planned project. Thanks to all who worked on the district grant, stored the books, put Rotary stickers on them, and delivered the books. A great job well done. In addition to these local projects, the club has donated $500 for a water project in El Salvador (led by the Ft. Collins Breakfast Rotary Club); has contributed $3,040 toward a $5,000 scholarship program in Mexico that will be supported by a District grant, and has completed a $9,000-plus conference to train nurses in Rwanda to diagnose and treat strep throat, which if untreated can lead to fatal rheumatic heart disease. Now you see why our motto is “Service Above Self!” You are part of this active Rotary club and it is through your support with your time, talents, and treasure that we are successful. Have other service ideas? Share them with the club’s Service Committee! |

A year of war in UkraineBy John Hewko, General Secretary and CEO of Rotary International Today is the one-year anniversary of the tragic war in Ukraine. It’s a war that never should have started. And it’s a conflict that has evolved into a non-stop humanitarian catastrophe because the Russia strategy is now to inflict as much pain on the civilian population of Ukraine as possible. For a peace-based, humanitarian organization like Rotary, this type of conflict is heartbreaking. Yesterday was our 118th anniversary, and throughout our history, Rotary has always stood on the side of promoting peace and rebuilding from the ashes of destruction. Peace is a central goal of Rotary, and we work tirelessly to help avoid and stop armed conflicts. Our focus is on helping people in need and creating the conditions for lasting peace. But now, the people of Ukraine are trapped in a humanitarian and refugee crisis at a scale not seen in Europe since the Second World War. This conflict also hits me on a personal level. My parents are from Ukraine. They came to the United States in 1949 after having spent four years in a refugee camp in southern Germany. I grew up speaking Ukrainian at home, and my wife, Marga, and I lived in Ukraine from 1991 to 1996. In 1991-1992, I was privileged enough to play a small role in preparing the initial draft of Ukraine’s post-Soviet constitution and participating in the working groups that were developing the initial Ukrainian post-independence legislative initiatives. I still have a great deal of family, friends, and former colleagues there. |

Welcome, Corporate Members!Last December, the Lander Rotary Club amended its Bylaws to establish corporate memberships, a new membership category, and we are happy to welcome our first corporate members! A business or corporate member designates a "primary member" as its Rotarian member and may designate two alternate members to attend our meetings and participate in our service projects. of Our first three corporate members are: Leadership Wyoming: Tobey Schmidt grew up in Indiana before heading west to earn a journalism degree at the University of Arizona. Her passions for outdoor adventures and photography took her to Alaska for a few summers, and she eventually made her way to Lander to work for Hermann Global. Now, years later, she proudly works for Leadership Wyoming and is the Board chair for the Lander Valley Farmers Market. In her free time, she loves to sew leather bags for her small business, Wyoming Bag Company. And...she’s getting married this fall! Wyoming Outdoor Council: John Burrows is the Director of Energy and Climate Policy at the Wyoming Outdoor Council and works occasionally as a NOLS field instructor. He is the president of Fremont County’s Trout Unlimited chapter and serves on the steering committee of the Lander Climate Action Network. John spent much of his childhood in North Carolina rambling down Appalachian backroads in search of good trout streams, long trail-runs, and backcountry adventures. He attended college and graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University. Brandon Reynolds (Program Director) and Kristen Brown (Associate Director) will be the Outdoor Council’s initial alternate members. National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS): Jayme Blackburn is the Executive Assistant to the President (Rotarian Terri Watson) at NOLS and is a long time “Lander lover.” She’s spent a lot of time here over the last 40+ years, visiting her aunt, Linda Hudson, also a Rotarian, enjoying the 4th of July activities, and sending her two kids to camp at every opportunity. She and her husband and two children, students at Lander Valley High School, moved here 3 1/2 years ago. As a Rotarian, Jayme is looking forward to being engaged in more community outreach, service work, and connection to the Lander community.her husband and two children, students at Lander Valley High School, moved here 3 1/2 years ago. Another informative Bulletin from Jerry Venters.Rotary’s role in eradicating polio It started innocently enough. There was a huge outbreak of polio in The Philippines and Rotarians undertook in 1979 to stop that epidemic by vaccinating 6,000,000 Filipino children. There was a naïve belief that the raging worldwide epidemic that was crippling some 350,000 people a year, most of them children 5 and under, could be stopped in a few years. That vaccination campaign didn’t stop the epidemic, but it convinced Rotarians that they should lead the effort to eradicate polio. At the RI Convention in 1985 in Kansas City, Rotarians voted to launch a campaign to raise $120 million to vaccinate children against polio. But Rotarians didn’t raise $120 million – they raised $250 million, and the campaign was on! (Since then, Rotarians have contributed more than $2.2 billion to the campaign through PolioPlus.) Soon, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others joined Rotary in the campaign. The official campaign started in 1988 when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), said to be largest international public health initiative in history, was launched. Now, nearly 40 years and $19 billion later, polio has been reduced by 99.9% and millions of children have been saved from paralysis and death, but it still has not been eradicated. (90% immunization is considered necessary to stop it.) Safe to say, this worldwide effort likely would not have started when it did had it not been for Rotary and Rotarians. As cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” And that’s what Rotarians are doing! For much more information, go to https://polioeradication.org/ and https://www.rotary.org/en/history-rotary-polio-eradication-efforts. |

Four Lander Rotarians attend Rotary International ConventionFour Rotarians from Lander -- Jim and Renee Kniola and Jerry and Cassy Venters -- were inspired and energized by the internationality of Rotary at the recent Rotary International Convention in Houston, Texas (June 4-8). This was the first in-person International Convention for Rotary in three years; the last two were held virtually because of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. More than 11,000 Rotarians and guests from around the world attended the five-day event in Houston. Some of the more inspirational moments for the Lander Rotarians:
An international convention is a great way to meet Rotarians from around the world and experience the internationality of Rotary. Next year's convention will be in Melbourne, New South Wales, Australia, 27-31 May. Registration is now open at: https://convention.rotary.org/en/melbourne |

Rotary Giving to The Rotary International Foundation
After a great month in February focused on Peace, I want to take a moment to commend and encourage these two Zones on your Annual Programs Fund giving. The giving levels, through January 2022 and seven months of this 2021-22 Rotary year, are on a record-setting pace. Reviewing past history closely (the past three full Rotary years), on average, your giving through seven months is typically about 60% of where you end up for the full Rotary year. If that same trend is indeed the case again this year, then the Zone 26 current per capita through seven months of $151.17 would yield a possible annual per capita this year of $253.55! And the Zone 27 current per capital through seven months of $146.87 would yield a possible annual per capita this year of $246.70! When you combine the two zones, the current combined per capital through seven months of $149.08 would yield a possible annual per capita this year of $250.22. Wow, that is indeed Serving to Change Lives! You would become a part of a very select group of Zones in the Rotary world. I commend and encourage this giving – we certainly are on pace to exceed $200 per capita as a challenge this year. Let’s keep it going! |

Work on the Girls Home part 2This is not an ad, but a plea for volunteers to help us complete the outside work for the service project that the club has undertaken at the Girls’ Group Home on N. 2nd Street. Take a look at the attached work list and you’ll see that we’ve accomplished a lot this month, but we have a lot to do. If we can apply some elbow grease now, we can finish this before the snow flies! So far, we have worked 76 hours on the project! We will have “work mornings” the next two Saturdays -- August 28 and September 4 (and, yes, I know that’s Labor Day weekend!) -- and I’m asking/pleading for volunteers on those Saturdays to help us get this important project completed. We’ll work from 8:30 to noon each day, no more, I promise! If it is more convenient for you to work for a couple of hours on a weekday, we can make that work, too. Just contact me. Please let me know when you can work. We’re counting on you! Jerry Venters for the Service Committee 816-665-9272 jvrotary6040@yahoo.com |

Girls Home Project part 1Lander Rotarians Undertake Projects at Group HomeEight Lander Rotarians and three Rotary spouses descended on the Fremont County Girls Group Home on August 7 to begin a number of work projects at the home. They helped clean up the grounds and a storage shed and hauled away four pickup loads of trash, including a large barbecue grill from the elevated back deck and some worn-out couches from the living area. Others sanded door trim and rails on the back deck for future priming and painting, while others sanded the flooring on the back deck and the entire front entry porch in preparation for staining. All done with the sound of weed eaters whirring in the background. Prior to the work day, Lander Rotarians had built a fire pit for the home’s residents and purchased and installed a dishwasher. The work projects will continue for several more weeks because painting and staining cannot all be done at the same time. |

THWARTING THE BEAVERSSeveral interested Lander Citizens, a few Rotarians, and representatives of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the City of Lander ganged up on the Beavers last Saturday. It seems as if the little fellas have been creating havoc on the Cottonwood trees along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River and something needed to be done to curb their enthusiasm. Since the nearby County Jail was plumb full of folks and packing the Beavers in with those folks did not seem to be wise for several reasons, another plan was devised. Wrapping the trees with wire seems to have worked elsewhere and so that become the plan to help out the trees and to outfox the Beaver critters. Well, at the end of the morning, it appeared that it was the trees 1 and the Beavers 0 as wire cages were erected around still healthy Cottonwoods. One of the workers commented “chew on that you little wretches” |

Lander Rotary was pleased to welcome special guest Larry A. Lunsford.Incoming Rotary Foundation Trustee Speaks at Lander ClubIncoming TRF Trustee Speaks at Lander Club; Encouraged by Giving During Pandemic Despite the impact of the worldwide Covid pandemic, overall giving to The Rotary Foundation for the last six months of 2020 decreased just 2% from a year earlier. Directed giving, much of it for projects focused on Covid-related issues, was up 41%, Larry Lunsford, an incoming member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, told the Lander Rotary Club at its March 10 meeting. Lunsford, a member of the Kansas City Plaza Rotary Club in D6040, said he was encouraged by the level of giving in the face of the pandemic. Thanks to continued strong giving and higher investment earnings, the Foundation was able to fund more than $32 million in Covid-related projects, Lunsford told the club. Lunsford also was encouraged by recent “very strong momentum” in Rotary’s polio eradication campaign, especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the only two remaining polio-endemic countries. [Thus far in 2021, only two cases have been reported there.] The Rotary Foundation has achieved a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, a premier evaluator of charitable organizations, for 13 consecutive years, a feat matched by just 1% of all ranked organizations, he said. Lunsford was D6040 District Governor in 2001-02. He served as a Rotary International Director in 2013-15 and will begin a four-year term on the TRF Board of Trustees on July 1. He is a former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar (Australia 1982) and is a recipient of the Service Above Self Award. |

Lander Rotary shares Bison meat with local food banksThe Corona Virus outbreak was responsible for the cancellation of this year’s annual Lander Rotary Fourth of July Buffalo BBQ. This Buffalo BBQ is the major fund raiser for Lander Rotary’s local and International service projects including the world wide eradication of Polio, local scholarships and youth programs, support for the Lander Community Food Bank and the Lander weekly free Community meal.Through the generosity of the Raynolds family, Lander Rotary had hundreds of pounds of bison meat that had been cut, processed, wrapped, and frozen in preparation of serving the meat at the BBQ on July Fourth. With no place to use it, the club decided to sell the meat to the public and asked that the public consider donating a portion of their purchase to local food banks. The Funds raised through the sale were earmarked for the Lander Rotary service projects noted above. The public demand for the bison meat was overwhelming; nearly all of the meat was spoken for within days of it being offered. As a result of the donation of meat by the public, Lander Rotary was able to donate 48 brats and 100 burger patties plus a $400 check to the Care and Share Food Bank in Lander and 44 brats and 300 burger patties to the Shoshone Food Distribution program in Fort Washakie. Making the presentation was John Brown, President of the Lander Rotary Club. Accepting the donations for the Lander Care and Share Food Bank was Audrey Krise Director of the Food Bank. Accepting the donation for the Shoshone Food Distribution Program were Dory Green, Jr. and Jan Pogoree of the Food Program. |

Buffalo Brats and Burgers for 2020!This year, the Lander Rotary club will not host our annual Fourth of July Buffalo BBQ as usual. However, we want to make sure you can! We are selling frozen locally raised, butchered, and processed buffalo burgers and brats so you can host a backyard Buffalo BBQ on the 4th of July! The burgers and brats can be purchased online: https://lander-rotary.square.site/ They’ll be available for you to pick up on Friday, July 3rd at City Park. Rotary will invest the proceeds from this event in community service projects and for covid-relief funds. We also encourage you to “buy one, and give one.” If you purchase burgers or brats for your family, we’ll discount a second package that will be donated to the Lander Care and Share Food Bank and Eastern Shoshone Food Program so that as many area families as possible can have a Buffalo BBQ of their own. Thank you for considering helping us out! See the purchase site for details. If you have questions, you can send them to our volunteer organizers through the sales website. |

PURPLE PINKIE DAYLander Rotary club is holding PURPLE PINKIE DAY on Wednesday November 20, to raise money for polio eradication. For $1.00, a person can have his or her PINKIE PAINTED PURPLE to show support for this program. All of the money collected will be used to assist Rotary International efforts in global polio eradication. You can have YOUR PINKIE PAINTED PURPLE at the following locations from noon to 1:00: Mr. D’s, the Lander Bake Shop, Gannett Peak Sports, Safeway Ace Hardware While North and South America have been polio free for several decades, the disease still can be found in the Middle East. Polio is highly contagious, and due to global travel, the whole world is at risk if polio is present in any country in the world Members: Here is the plan On Wednesday Nov, 20 we will have tables and donation boxes at the five locations noted above. Members should be present from 12:00 to 1:00 pm to help solicit donations. We recommend wearing purple if you can and dress for indoor or outdoor weather. The table at Ace will be outside and the tables at the other locations may be indoors or outside depending on the weather. In some locations we feel being on the sidewalk would give more exposure if the weather permits. Smile, have fun and make some money for Polio! |

When you contribute to Rotary International, where does your money go?We all have probably heard of the horror stories (appropriate this time of year) of service organizations spending contributed funds for high salaries, extravagant trips and other selfish purposes rather than getting the money where it belongs-to those in need. WELL ROTARY INTERNATIONAL IS NOT ONE OF THEM. Here are the true facts (not false news) about where your money goes when you contribute to Rotary International It has the highest rating (four stars) given by Charity Navigator. It's overall rating is 97.51%, the next closest rating is 93.92% It's A&T rating is 100.0% , the next closest is 96% |

DO NOT PAY THE RANSOM DEMAND!"BELLE" bell nappers violate the first rule of the Rotary FOUR WAY TEST.Yes it is true, they have not told the TRUTH; they are holding our beloved Belle at a location other than those crassly shown in the ransom photos. Scientific examination of their so-called ransom photos leads at least one forensic expert to expose this cruel hoax. The Forensic Expert offers the proof of this dastardly deed in the dramatic photos shown on the following page. (warning viewing these photos is not for the faint hearted, the first four of these images have been altered and have been declared obscene).

On May 17, Sam Lightner discussed his new book: "Heavy Green"Sam has recently written a historical fiction book. Heavy Green. Below is the book description:"By 1967 the Pentagon could see that stopping the flow of weapons into South Vietnam was the only way the United States could win the war. Key to this effort was the aerial bombing of certain supply depots and constriction points along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, but the weather and air defenses of North Vietnam made that task nearly impossible. Taking advantage of the rugged terrain of Laos, and with the help of the Thai Special Forces and the Laotian hill tribes, the CIA put into place a covert program that could pinpoint each of the bombing raids. This top secret operation would tilt the axis of the war, and the North Vietnamese had to counter it. Meticulously researched and based on information classified until 1988, Heavy Green is an epic war novel that tells the story of this secret operation and the daring raid that was designed to bring it down." |

Lander Rotary and Lander Interact team up to clean up the MAW grounds
A bunch of eager young Lander Interact Club members were on hand at the MAW grounds to show the Lander Rotarians how to get real work done. The young adults offered classes in grass pulling, digging and bagging to the more sedate Rotarians.
The only one not working was a very smart dog that found some shade and relaxed while the toil was progressing around her.
To show their appreciation to the Interact workers, the Lander Rotary Club treated them to lunch and a Game and Fish presentation on fishing in the Wind River Range.

Besides, it is a real hoot watching the Cat in action.

The Cat and friends make it to Gannett Peak Elementary once again
The Cat came back!
Only this time it was welcomed by a bunch of eager kindergartners and first graders at Gannett Peak Elementary.
The Doctor Seuss characters, The Cat in the Hat and Things One and Two entertained the kids with their antics while
Fremont County Sheriff Skip Hornecker narrated the story of the wayward cat and his friends.
Judging by the grins on the kids they had almost as much fun as the performers!
A tip of the Cat's Hat goes out to organizer Helen Higby, Skip Hornecker, the Wyoming Catholic College student "Things" and of course to the Cat who shall remain un-named at this time.
